The Thinker

Just an observation.....and it's not specific to the 4 legged art show....but
I'm REALLY surprised at how many folks said to me, "There is nothing here that would go with my house" ie: decor
Now look, to be brutally honest, out of 103 pieces at the show there were probably only 3 that I would have bought. The old "leap off the wall and grab me" just wasn't happening. Perhaps it was the subject matter ie: other peoples pets? BUT....I have NEVER looked at a piece of art and baulked at buying it because it didn't go with the carpet.....or the lounge!
I don't understand? Doesn't art stand alone? Shouldn't art "stick out" and if you like it because it really grabbed something within then shouldn't that be exemplified by the painting saying, "Hey, look at me!".....not blend in with the colour scheme.
I'm interested and want to know your thoughts on the subject. Feedback please?

You've heard my views on this already. I say art in isolation e.g. in a gallery ,is viewed on it's own merits. Art you hang in your own house is viewed in the context of it's surroundings. Try hanging a great work in your dunny and see what the artist thinks about it. If it doesn't feel right to the owner in a certain location then that's their choice. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with a particular piece. I love Zappa but wouldn't play it at my wedding. My funeral is another matter.
And that's my two cents.

Oh, and I don't think people are necessarily talking about colour schemes either. I happened to like that painting of the boat. My place ain't the least bit nautical though so I don't think it would "go". If on the other hand I had a special room full of just paintings I'd stick it in there no probs.

WHY is art hung in your house viewed in the context of its surroundings? That's the bit I don't get? I mean, if I go to someones house and there is a painting or photograph....lets take "Piss Christ" by Andres Serrano for example (and you can hang that one in your dunny) No:1 I don't believe the artist gives a flying fu*k where you hang it and No:2 your gonna have a hell of a time making it "go" with anything.....and I could use the term "nautical" here.
So your gonna have to do better than that!
Oooooh Kayyyyy.
I just wrote a big reply, clicked publish and it vanished into the ether never to be seen again (just like my youth). Bugger if I'm going to climb back onto that soap box and start ranting again, I'm all out of breath, le puff le pant...
Art is always viewed in context.
I don't give a flying f*ck what the artist or anyone else thinks. If I don't want something in my house that's the end of it.
Now get orf my lawn. Go on!
